Externum Cordis: Synchronism

Externum Cordis: Synchronism is an interactive installation which features two animatronic terminals that provides visitors the surreal experience of touching and listening to their own hearts as well as another person’s. Through this experience, we hope that people can reflect on the challenge of isolation brought about by the pandemic and emotional and physical void it presents in terms of communication.

Externum Cordis: Synchronism has an online component which features a generative art piece based on the heart rate data collected over the exhibition period. As participants engage in a shared experience through the terminals, their heart rate would start to synchronize. When moments of heart rate synchronization is detected, an object is added to the 3D generative art piece. This object changes the aesthetics and acoustics of the generative art piece. Visitors to the online generative artwork will be able to “navigate” around the 3D art piece and examine the phenomenon captured in Externum Cordis: Synchronism.
